On May 20th 2017 The Shenandoah Valley Homebrewers Guild and Valley Homebrew will present the 5th Annual Hop Blossom Homebrew Competition in Winchester, VA in conjunction with the 5th Annual Hop Blossom Craft Beer Festival on Saturday June 10th in Old Town Winchester.

This AHA/BJCP (American Homebrewers Association/Beer Judge Certification Program) registered and sanctioned event will be judged on Saturday, May 20th 2017, two weeks before the Hop Blossom Craft Beer Festival and is open to any amateur homebrewer age 21 or older.

General Entry Information:

  • Entries are $7 Each
  • All entries will be picked up from drop-off locations the day of the entry deadline.
  • All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).
  • The competition organizers are not responsible for mis-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.
  • The competition organizers reserve the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries.
  • All entries must be pair in full via the Paypal Payment option on the Competition Website. No Checks or Cash will be accepted and any entries that have these in the shipment will NOT be returned at our expense.
  • Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least one, preferably 2 BJCP judges.
  • Entries will be accepted in ALL of the 2015 BJCP categories. Only one entry per subcategory will be accepted (except for categories 29 (Fruit Beer) & 34 (Specialty Beer) where multiple entries will be accepted from the same brewer).   • In the following Categories the brewer must specify the specialty style that the base beer and or what the Clone Beer is and if there are any special fermentables and or Fruit is and if there are any, what are they and what makes the Beer Special or is its Specialty:

  •  AND PROPERLY LABEL YOUR BEER SO THAT IT CAN BE JUDGED APPROPRIATELY. NOT REPORTING REQUIRED INFORMATION MAKES JUDGING VERY DIFFICULT. WE WANT TO GIVE YOU THE BEST FEEDBACK POSSIBLE.

Entry Requirements:

Provide (3)THREE BOTTLES for each entry.

 

Only STANDARD longneck 12oz Bottles will be accepted.No Squatty Bottles, No Sierra Nevada, Grolsch-type bottles etc. Bottles with raised lettering are acceptable i.e Sam Adams bottles. Printed crown caps are acceptable if they are blacked out with a black marking pen to assure anonymity in judging. Use a rubber band to attach Bottle IDs. Please do not glue or tape on label.

Its legal to ship your entries via UPS, FedEx Ground or air freight. Usually you will be asked the contents of the package; your reply should be: “Bottles, but they are double-boxed and padded well.” DO NOT send entries via US Postal Services. It is illegal to ship via USPS and your entry will not be judged. PACK YOUR ENTRIES WELL: Line the inside of your carton with a plastic trash bag. Partition and pack each bottle with adequate packaging material. Clearly state “GLASS FRAGILE THIS SIDE UP” on the package. No late entries will be accepted.

 

Entry Payment:

All Payments must be made via the Paypal link on the Competition Site. No Checks/Cash/Money orders will be accepted. And no returns will be made.

5 Entry limit per Brewer

The competition committee reserves the right to combine categories based on number of entries. All possible effort will be made to combine similar styles. All brews in combined categories will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in.

 

The Best of Show judging will be determined by a Best of Show panel based on a second judging of the top winners.

 

Bottles will not be returned to entrants.

 

Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each category based on the highest first round scores. The minimum score for 3rd place is 21, 2nd place is 24 and 1st place is 27. No awards will be given on a per category basis for any entry scoring lower than 21.An award for Best of Show and 2nd Best of Show will be given to the top two beers of the competition. All 1st place category beers scoring higher than 30 plus, up to the next two highest scoring entries above 30 will advance to the Best of Show table with a maximum of 9 beers to be considered for the top awards.The top three scoring entries regardless of score will placed in a Best of Show format with the top 2 beers receiving the awards.Results will be announced at The Hop Blossom Craft Beer Festival on Saturday June 10th, the day after the event the Results will be posted on this site. Score sheets and awards will be mailed out during the week following the The Hop Blossom Craft Beer Festival at the main stage where the bands play. The time will be approximately 3:30pm. In addition to medals awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each category and best of show, a variety of prizes have been donated in select categories based on the generous donations from our many sponsors.
